Duane Michals

Duane Michaes excels at drawing spirituality and controversy to the forefront of his photographs. Michals often challenges social norms and values and frequently uses spiritual and religious iconography in his work. He demontrates incredible skill and dexterity with light and contrast, playing with it to further enphasise the points he is trying to make. His photographs nearly always come equipped with annotation, which further unravels the mystery and context of his work, with Michals stating: “seeing words on a page pleases me. It is like a trail i’ve left behind me, uncertain, strange markings, a proof that i’ve been there.”

“It is important not to worry about appearances, but about what people are. What they represent in ones life is the meaningful thing, not what they resemble today or yesterday.”
